Pet travel a growing trend

International pet travel survey shows most pet owners choose pet friendly travel once a year for their pets

AUSTIN, Texas - May 4, 2010:  PetRelocation.com, the international pet travel and transportation industry's leading service provider, announced today the results of its first annual Summer Pet Travel Survey of more than 6000 pet owners worldwide, showing that most pet owners travel at least once a year with their pets.

Pet Friendly Travel Going to the Dogs

The majority of pet owners surveyed (61 percent) said they travel more than 50 mi. (80 km.) with their pets at least once a year, with 38 percent of those pet owners stating that they travel as often as once a month with their pets.  Pet friendly travel still is almost exclusively for dogs, with over half of the pet owners (61 percent) saying that they choose to travel with their dogs (33 percent of pet owners travel with their cats).

Airline Fee Frustration

Most difficult part of travel with pets, 38 percent of pet owners say, is that airline pet travel fees are too expensive, shortly followed by difficulty that there is not enough selection of pet friendly airlines.

Summer Travel Plans Heating Up

Summer pet travel appears to be on many pet owners' agendas.  The survey, which was sent out during the month of April, found that 57 percent said they planned on traveling with their pet within the next 3 months, while 33 percent plans on traveling with their pet within the next year.

Crossing Borders

Seventy-one percent (71 percent) of pet owners said they had never traveled internationally with their pets, however the survey found the majority of pet owners (51 percent) are considering international pet travel within the next year.  Forty two percent (42 percent) of those pet owners said they are making plans to travel internationally with their pets within the next year.

Pet Business Booming

Twice as many pet owners (66 percent) said they choose to stay at pet friendly hotels, even when they are not traveling with pets, than those who said they don't (33 percent).  However, only 47 percent of pet owners choose to fly pet friendly airlines when they're not flying with pets as compared to the 52 percent who don't.

Safety First

An overwhelming majority of pet owners, eighty percent (eighty percent), said that the safety of their pet while traveling is the most important thing when planning their pet's travel arrangements.  Keeping costs down and convenience to a pet owner's own travel arrangements both weighed in at nine percent.
