![]() Here at BellaDOG, the excitement surrounding next week’s Party Like a Pinup at Roxy’s Gala is mounting! The Ybor City event will inspire and educate, and we’re honored to be sponsoring it. It will be a celebration in honor of the nobility, history and temperament of pit bulls. It will also shed light on how we – their human counterparts, pet and pit bull lovers – can make a difference in the fight against stereotypes, sensationalized media reports and the misinformation that often circulates. Plus, we can’t wait to see attendees dressed in their classic pinup wear: the dresses, pumps and pincurls!
We got the opportunity to chat with Little Darling, Founder and President of Pinups for Pitbulls, the non-profit group who is hosting the event. Pinups for Pitbulls’ volunteer staff works year-round to raise funds for pit bull-friendly rescue groups and individual bullies in shelters across the country. The group’s annual calendar featuring a pit bull-loving pinup for each month is their biggest seller and aims at educating the public on Breed Specific Legislation and other issues.
1. What inspired you to create Pinups for Pitbulls? Where did your love of pit bulls come from and why was it a natural fit to pair that love with pinups? “My love of the American Pit Bull Terrier and Staffordshire terriers, along with other pit bull-type dogs, came from volunteering at animal shelters. I kept meeting these loyal, gentle, loving dogs, and wondered why everything I read in the news or saw on TV spoke only to their “vicious” and “aggressive” nature. I didn’t understand why my first-hand experience with bully breeds didn’t sync up with the public hysteria surrounding them. I saw dogs who couldn’t make the case for themselves and a need that wasn't being fulfilled rapidly enough to save them from breed discriminatory laws that were popping up everywhere. It fits naturally into the Pinup theme for a few reasons: Pinups helped inspire our war heroes to come home. They also represented America and our ideals. The American Pit Bull Terrier once held the same role as Pinups did, including Sgt. Stubby, WWI hero. They're a strong part of American history and are as relevant and inspiring today (pinups and pit bull-type dogs) as they were back in the late 1800's through WWII.” 2. How did Pinups for Pitbulls get involved in Party Like a Pinup at Roxy’s Gala at the historic Don Vicente Inn in Ybor City? What part(s) of the event are you most looking forward to? “We were asked to host the event with Pit Stop Bullys by Lisa Presnail and Art Fyvolent. We worked together to save a dog, Angel, they had rescued a while back – she was starved and in bad shape. Angel now enjoys a happy, healthy life! The experience created a great relationship between us and Pit Stop Bullys and opened the door for us to host this unforgettable event together. I’m excited to meet our supporters in Florida, Lisa and Art and all of the wonderful people who helped make this event a reality. Of course, I’m excited to see Shorty Rossi of Pit Boss and his pit bull, Hercules. Most of all, I’m excited to give the guest of honor – Roxy – a big ol’ 10th birthday kiss! Also, I’ve never been to Ybor City, which I hear is beautiful.” 3. What would be the best possible outcome for this event? How much are you hoping is raised and where will the money go? “The best possible outcome would be to attract city council members from Miami Dade and overturn their current breed discriminatory bans. Other than that, we hope to celebrate with our fans, inspire hope into action for change, and to educate some of the misinformed public – all while celebrating a successful event! We hope to raise more than $20,000 for Pinups for Pitbulls and Pit Stop Bullys to further both our missions!” 4. What are three main reasons that pet lovers and bully supporters should attend Party Like a Pinup? “One, Could there possibly be anything cooler happening that night? It’s doubtful! Two, they’ll get to meet Shorty Rossi & Hercules of Discovery Channel’s Pit Boss! They'll get to hangout with me and see my burlesque performance. Three, they'll be raising funds to help pay for spay and neuter, emergency transports, emergency surgeries, and education programs to help fight against breed discrimination and reclaim the name for America's Dog.” 5. What is your biggest wish for the future of pit bulls (and all bully breeds)? “My biggest wish for the future of pit bulls would be for them to be loved and judged as individual dogs. I also hope that in the future that people will realize that a pit bull is not a breed, it’s a nickname for more than 30 individual block headed, muscular breeds. So that when they hear about a “pit bull” attack in the news, they already know that these attacks are naming a breed that doesn’t exist. That being said, the American Pit Bull Terrier and the mixed bully breeds deserve a chance to live in a loving home with food, shelter, safety and a bed to call their own (or to share yours). I want that for all dogs, not just pit bull-type dogs.” Tickets are still available for this event; check out www.roxygala.com to find out more. Hope to see you there!
