Mystery Donor Gives $1.5 Million For Shelter – In Memory Of “Ace”
PDF Print E-mail

Being from Detroit myself, I know the bitter cold of winter and the roughness within the city.....family pets have alot against them should they be cast out onto the "Dead" streets.  Economy there is horrendous and the shelter budgets are even worse.  Homeless pets in Detroit are running in the 50,000 range and out of that comes a huge number of homeless Pit Bull type breeds - and sadly, whether good, bad, or otherwise are almost immediately euthanized.  Bad Rap Blog states that "City policy will not permit Detroit Animal Control to transfer Pit Bull type dogs out to even the most highly qualified shelters or rescue groups. Nope. Not one."  Which leads us to the story of a dog, named “Ace,” who was found emaciated and broken at an Ace Hardware store in Detroit.  Though thousands stood up to save him, he was put to death because of "policy" despite an apparent restraining order that attorney Corbett O’Meara said was presented to ci [ … ]

Private Shelter, Animal Control, Rescue Group....What's the Difference?

PRIVATE SHELTERS

Non-profit, private shelters, which often (but not always!) have terms like “SPCA” or “Humane Society” in their names, are one place many people go when they’re interested in adopting a dog or cat.

Some of these shelters are modern and beautiful, and others are old-fashioned. The best of them will have lots of helpful, friendly volunteers and/or staff members who are knowledgeable about the pets in the shelter. These folks are invaluable in matching your needs to the characteristics of the pets, and in answering basic questions about breed, behavior, etc.

Warning About Fake Humane Charities

The Humane Society of the United States Issues Warning About Fake Humane Charities

Make Sure Your Support Goes to Proven Organizations –Local and National

Tender-hearted Americans beware: Every holiday season, heartless Internet scammers play on public concerns for animal welfare. New websites pop up promising to rescue animals in peril, with no actual connection to humane societies or animal shelters, and no track record of helping animals.

The Humane Society of the United States urges Americans to be generous this holiday season – to donate to their local humane society or other pet shelter or rescue group, and to support the broad-based and proven work of The Humane Society of the United States and other national organizations. Credible research shows that typical donors and volunteers support more than just a single organization, and understand that animal cruelty is a wide-ranging concern that requires a response on the local, national, and international level.

Meet Minka and Meet Her Best Friends Guardian Angels!
PDF Print E-mail

Whoa – those are some crazy feet!

Who couldn’t love Minka? She is the sweetest little black poodle ... ever. I first met Minka when she came into the clinic to be spayed. You couldn’t really miss her ... she came in walking on her carpi, or wrist joints. Her two front feet were directed laterally (to the sides) and flopped when she walked, making it look like she was wearing a pair of socks that were falling off her feet and way too long. I literally did a double take.Although the joints were crunchy when I manipulated them, she really didn’t seem to be in too much discomfort. I noted that I could reduce her feet back to a normal position, but the joints were just not stable at all. Also, some of the tendons were contracted so the range of motion of the joints in a “normal” position was very limited. Hmm, very odd. It almost appeared as if those joints were chronically dislocated. We needed a closer look.

We anesthetized Minka and spayed her without complication. We then [ … ]

Meet Tara Harper, Founder of Paws In The City, Reality TV Star and a "10 Most Beautiful Women In Dallas" Nominee!

Tell us about your first rescue?
Tara:
My very first rescue happened when I was three years old. My family was leaving church and I saw a dog running down the street so I chased after it until I caught her and begged my dad to keep her. He said no, but he always told me when he looked over at “my blonde ringlets and big blue eyes” he would cave. So needless to say, we kept the dog and Sally was a wonderful part of our family for over 18 years.

Move on to Tara's adulthood and you'll see nothing's changed except the number of rescues Tara is responsible for!  In 2005, Tara Co-Founded Paws In The City with hopes and dreams of saving dogs from certain death from the Dallas city animal shelter. Tara knew the need was huge and the startup rescue was small; but with good luck and determination, maybe the group [ … ]

Compassion Fatigue - Emotional Burnout in the Animal Care Field
PDF Print E-mail
~By Colleen Mihelich, Founder, Peternity.com   The "double-edged sword" phenomenon of working in the animal care industry – you’ve dedicated your life to making a positive difference for animals, but the emotional stress is draining, exhausting and taking a toll on you. You can’t imagine doing anything else with your life, but outside of your work, do you have a life? You work in the animal care industry, not necessarily because you’ve chosen to, but because it’s chosen you. You cannot exist without doing all that you can to care for and save animals. You love what you do, but the heartbreak and emotional strain on you is sometimes too much to bear. There is a term for all of this, it’s called Compassion Fatigue (further referenced as CF) and it is normal, and very real.     Not only does CF dominate your professional life, but it always rears its head in your personal life – sleepless nights, exhaustion, acute sadness, depression, isolation from [ … ]
