POOR LITTLE RICH DOG
Ernie is Healthy, Wealthy, and Abused.
by Jon Katz; 2004
Ernie, a fluffy, 10-week-old Golden Retriever with heart-
melting eyes, was originally a birthday present. The lucky recipient was Danielle, a pony-tailed 11-year-old living in an affluent Westchester, N.Y., suburb. Danielle’s passions for some time had been soccer, Justin Timberlake, and instant messaging, but her parents wanted to give her a different kind of birthday gift, “something that you didn’t plug in or watch, something that would give her a sense of responsibility.” She’d often said she’d love a puppy and vowed to take care of it.
Girl and dog, growing up together—what parent hasn’t pictured it? Her folks envisioned long family walks around the neighborhood, Ernie frolicking on the lawn while they gardened. They could see him riding along to soccer games.

Dogs Deserve Better receives many heartbreaking e-mails about chained dogs, and a neighbor/or concerned citizen would like to know what can be done. How can you rescue this dog?
Each situation is different, and at Dogs Deserve Better we've found that what works in one situation doesn't necessarily work in the next one. To date, we've succeeded in getting over 75 dogs off chains at the main headquarters since Dogs Deserve Better started in August 2002. And we estimate at least 300 other cases of reps and volunteers who've rescued chained dogs in other areas. We are always seeking those willing to foster and train a rescued chained dog, so that they may indeed go to a better life. If you're willing to foster, please visit the adoption page for a foster form. |

Pet Rescue Transports - Going the Distance for Our Four Legged Friends ... a personal view
If you think “doing what’s best” for unwanted animals still means something you’d rather not think about, then think again.
Fifteen Legs, The Documentary, is the story of animals who have run out of time. It’s about the people who save them at the eleventh hour. It’s the story of where they go next, and how they get there...
Gary and Kathy Borland have been involved with transporting pets from one location to another through a series of volunteer drivers around the country for many years. These “transports” consisted of volunteers offering to drive a “leg” (a specified route along a highway between one city and another) to get a particular animal or animals from one location to another. Although these legs sometimes take place between cities within a state, many times they are between c [ … ] |

 Cycle 4 Strays
Read about Davides adventures after this article!
The Ride: January 22 to April 2010
(more or less, depending on weather, traffic, bandits, etc.) From Dogtown, Best Friends Animal Society, in Kanab, Utah, to San José, Costa Rica to benefit the McKee Project and raise funds to promote spay & neuter in developing nations.
Sure, everyone knows a pet lover who will go that extra mile for a furry friend. But Davide Ulivieri is cycling roughly 4,000 miles — on a moped scooter, no less — to raise awareness about the need to spay and neuter animals.

Adoption: For Old Dogs, a New Leash on Life
~Special to the Washington Post, by Susan Lennon
Hershey, a chocolate Labrador retriever, spent the first six years of his life outdoors, chained by a three-foot tether to a tipped-on-its-side washing machine. This was his "doghouse." Untrained, unsocialized and unloved, he almost became a statistic. Instead, he was saved by a rescue group and then adopted by Bonnie Anthony, a psychiatrist in Bethesda. A year later, he earned his first competitive obedience title, proving that you can teach an old dog new tricks. He's 13 now, still winning obedience competitions -- and still bringing joy to his new family.
Hershey was lucky -- and unusual. He could have become [ … ] |

After the Puppy Mill - Life of a Breeding Dog
~Sheri-lyn Shepler
By the time this story is read, Igloo will be gone. A long life of misfortune and now a stronghold of cancer will inevitably cause her demise. Igloo is a Puppy Mill Dog. But, not the kind of puppy mill dog that ends up in a pet store or classified ad. Igloo is a breeding dog for a puppy mill. Igloo is the dog crammed into a filthy cage that no one ever sees. Igloo is a cash crop, a beautiful, but very unfortunate Siberian Husky born with little chance of ever being loved or having a nurturing and happy life.
You see, life is particularly bad for “breeding stock,” dogs. They live their entire lives in cages and are continually bred, over and over, for years, without human companionship and with little hope of ever becoming part of a family. These dogs [ … ] |

My Wake Up Call
~Sheri-lyn Shepler
September 5th, 2009
A few months back while attending an event in St. Petersburg, FL I stumbled upon 2 chained dogs while walking to my friends car to leave for home. My fear of any dog in misery forced me to case the yard where they were being held captive. One of the dogs, a dingy White German Shepherd, lay in a bed of dirt, chained to an old clothes pole. There was no dog house or place of shelter except the large tree that shaded him during what I could only assume were verylong, hot, horrible days spent alone. He didn’t act fearful or aggressive, in fact, he really didn’t show any emotion at all, but still, I hesitated to approach him in case my intentions were mistaken.
I noticed a bucket of water next to a make-shift garage and a big deep hole dug in the dirt where he ob [ … ] |
